أُصيب في ظهره برصاص القوات الأمنية الإسرائيلية من مسافة نحو ١٥ مترًا أثناء ابتعاده عنها بسيارته. وبحسب الشرطة، أُطلق عليه الرصاص للاشتباه في محاولته دهس أحد عناصر حرس الحدود. ولم تقدّم القوات الأمنية الموجودة في المكان الرعاية الطبية لعواد، وتوفي متأثرًا بجراحه بعد وقت قصير.

Hit in the back by Israeli security forces’ gunfire from about 15 meters away, as he was driving away from them. According to the police he was shot after he was suspected of an attempt to run over a Border Police officer. The security forces who were on the scene did not provide ‘Awwad medical attention and he died of his injuries shortly thereafter.
