È stato ferito mortalmente alla testa da colpi sparati dalle forze di sicurezza israeliane durante la Grande Marcia del Ritorno vicino alla recinzione di confine di Gaza, a nord della cittadina di Khuza'ah; migliaia di persone hanno preso parte alle proteste. Abu Jamus è stato colpito quando si trovava a circa 100 metri dalla recinzione. Durante la protesta aveva incendiato pneumatici e lanciato pietre contro le forze di sicurezza israeliane di stanza dall'altra parte della recinzione. È morto per le ferite più tardi quel giorno.

Fatally wounded in the head from shots fired by Israeli security forces during the Return Protests near the Gaza perimeter fence, north of the town Khuza'ah; thousands took part in the protests. Abu Jamus was shot when he was approximately 100m away from the fence. During the protest he had torched tires and thrown stones at Israeli security forces stationed on the other side of the fence. Succumbed to his wounds later that day.
