Hit in the head by a tear-gas canister fired by Israeli security forces, while he was with his back to the Gaza perimeter fence, about 150 meters away from it. The incident occurred during the Return Protests near the fence, east of Jabalya Refugee Camp; thousands took part in the protests. During the demonstration, some of the demonstrators torched tires and threw stones, explosive devices and improvised grenades at Israeli security forces who were stationed on the other side of the fence.
