Shot in the chest by Israeli security forces while he and a friend were carrying a tire and advancing up to several meters from the fence, during the Return Protests near the Gaza perimeter fence, east of Gaza City; thousands took part in the protests. During the demonstration, some of the demonstrators torched tires and threw stones, explosive devices and improvised grenades at Israeli security forces who were stationed on the other side of the fence.
