أُصيب في صدره برصاص جنود أطلقوه من كمين بعد أن ألقى، بحسب الجيش، زجاجة حارقة على قاعدة لحرس الحدود في البلدة. وأطلق الجنود قنابل غاز مسيل للدموع على طاقم إسعاف فلسطيني وصل لعلاج خنفسة المصاب. وتوفي متأثرًا بجراحه بعد وقت قصير. واحتجزت إسرائيل الجثمان حتى ٨ مارس ٢٠٢٢.

Wounded in the chest by soldiers who fired from an ambush after, according to the military, he threw a Molotov cocktail at a Border Police base in the town. The soldiers fired tear gas canisters at a Palestinian ambulance team who arrived to treat the wounded Khanafsah. He died of his wounds a short while later. Israel held the body until 8 March 2022.
